CVSA Truck Inspection Blitz

on Sunday, 19 April 2015.

Attention drivers across North America-the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's Roadcheck will be held June 2-4, 2015. 10,000 inspectors are expected to be spread across 1500 locations across the continent during the three day period.

The annual Roadcheck is a collaborative effort from many transportation safety agencies including:

  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
  • Transport Canada
  • Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators
  • Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (Mexico).

2014's Roadcheck resulted in the inspection of over 72,000 trucks and drivers. Last year's Roadcheck resulted in a vehicle out-of-service rate of 18.7% and a driver out-of-service rate of 4.8%.

The 2015 Roadcheck will focus on cargo securment, however inspectors will still primarily perform Level I inspections. The top 9 things inspectors will be looking for include:

  1. Brakes
  2. Coupling Devices
  3. Fuel & Exhaust Systems
  4. Frame, Van & Open-Top Trailers
  5. Lighting
  6. Securement of Cargo
  7. Steering
  8. Suspension
  9. Tires, Wheels, Rims & Hubs

The purpose of the CVSA's Annual Roadcheck is to ensure the safety of drivers and their vehicles and to ensure that operators are aware of the importance of safe vehicle operation. Since 1988, the CVSA estimates it has helped drivers avoid over 4,000 accidents and saved over 200 lives.

CVSA includes on its website several resources for drivers and fleets. A copy of the Top 9 Item Inspection sheet can be found here, and the CVSA checklist for drivers can be obtained here.
