Deadline Extended to Submit Comment on Speed-Limiter Proposal

on Thursday, 10 November 2016.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has extended the period for the trucking community to share opinions on the proposal for speed-limiters in large trucks, busses, and multipurpose vehicles with a GVWR greater than 26,000 pounds. The community was granted an additional 30 days, extending the deadline to December 7, 2016. If passed, the DOT ruling would prevent vehicles from traveling faster than 60, 65, or 69 mph, though the DOT is receptive to other suggested speed caps.

While some believe that preventing large trucks from speeding can increase safety for motorists on the highways, others cite potentially dangerous speed differentials as a result.

The proposal has drawn a lot of criticism from the American Trucking Associations since it was first announced on September 7. At an October 4 press conference, President and CEO, Chris Spear stated, “The various differentials in speed from what this rule proposes and what state speed limits are is dangerous.” Spear argued that the proposal was arbitrary with no scientific support. “What is this proposal? Three speed limits, not one. No studies to back it up. And no national cap on limits to address speed differentials."
