Company Poses as DOT to Scam Small Trucking Companies

on Thursday, 08 December 2016.

Last month, the Federal Trade Commission filed a suit alleging that the company, DOT Authority, and its subsidiaries, mislead trucking businesses through an onslaught of mass marketing techniques via email, text message, and phone calls into believing they were the Department of Transportation (DOT) to charge unnecessary fees for maintaining compliance requirements. Believing they were the DOT, businesses paid DOT Authority additional fees for filing their state and federal motor carrier registrations. The businesses, which were mostly small and family-owned, paid as much as $550 more than required to renew through the Unified Carrier Registration Portal. DOT Authority is believed to have made over $19 million since 2012.
