IFTA Audits Tips

on Thursday, 01 October 2009.

Each motor carrier that is required to report fuel taxes should retain five years of fuel tax records. Usually carriers will only maintain four years of past fuel tax records for IFTA audit purposes. However IFTA and IRP regulations both require carriers to maintain five years of records. IFTA states carriers must maintain four years of tax records plus current year, which leads many motor carriers to believe they only have to maintain four years of records. Maintaining a five-year fuel record will allow you to follow both IRP and IFTA requirements and could save you a lot of time, potential fines and unecesary audits.
