FMCSA No Longer Issuing "Registrant" USDOT Numbers

on Thursday, 30 August 2012.

Effective September 1, 2012, FMCSA will no longer issue "Registrant" USDOT numbers. A Registrant USDOT number is issued to owners of Motor Vehicles with a GVWR over 10,001 lbs that lease their truck to another company for operations. The company they lease to, i.e. the leasor, will be required to have a USDOT and will be responsible for safety. "Registrant" USDOT numbers were used so that the truck owner(s) could purchase the license plate for the truck on their own and not through their 'lease' company.

States will now begin issuing their own identification numbers to these types of carriers, and each state will have different forms and registration requirements. For example, Kentucky just announced that it will be implementing a process to issue these carriers a new KYTC customer number that will enable them to do business in Kentucky such as ordering their KYU license.

As always, Logistec/TTS will keep you informed as more details emerge from the states as to how they will treat "Registrant" USDOT numbers.
