January Sees Dip in Commercial Trucking Employment

on Wednesday, 15 February 2017.

In the January report published by the Department of Labor (DOL), they reported that for-hire commercial trucking saw a loss of 1,400 jobs at the start of the new year. Totals for December were also reduced 5,000 jobs from previous estimates, though the DOL maintains that the trucking industry saw gains every month since July, 2016.

Despite the drop in trucking employment, the U.S. economy experienced a gain of 227,000 jobs, slightly decreasing the unemployment percentage to 4.8.

In total, there are 1.4625 million currently employed in the trucking industry, compared with 1.4554 employed a year ago.

The DOL also reported a 4,000 job loss for the greater transportation and warehousing industry, while the larger areas of transportation, trade, and utilities grew by 44,000 jobs.

Manufacturing expanded by 5,000 jobs last month, and construction also increased by 36,000 jobs.
